We tend to define ourselves by things which are seen being experienced. For example, we see a body appearing and believe “I am the body.” If that body appears to be male or female, we then believe accordingly. Because we are identified with the body, whatever that body is seen to be experiencing continually develops this belief of who we are.
But what if one day the body suddenly vanished along with the physical universe, yet you were still present and aware? What would happen to all of those identifications? Would it make any sense to continue to believe you are those things which are seen to be no more? Were you ever those things to begin with? What would you be without any appearance left which could be used to identify yourself with?
