In a dream, as long as one takes the dream to be real, they can be bothered by all sorts of appearances which arise. There can be a monster chasing you, and you’ll run in fear. Why? Because you believe you can be hurt. However, the moment the experience is recognized as a dream, fear of the monster is lost. It can no longer scare you, because you realize you can’t be hurt by what’s only imagined. You realize not only is the monster imagined, but so is the body which you feared could be hurt. This isn’t saying that the monster ceases chasing, or even that he won’t get you, but that regardless of what happens, you know you’re perfectly safe. All that can be destroyed or hurt is within the dream, and you are beyond the dream.
